The plan was to cross the Sound of Gigha and circumnavigate the Isle of Gigha in an anti-clockwise direction. It was a bright sunny morning with a gentle breeze coming from the South West. Short work was made of the 4km crossing to Port an Sgiathain, then a leisurely paddle (and dodge of the Gigha ferry) around Ardminish Point to a beautiful sandy beach where lunch was enjoyed in glorious sunshine. An afternoon coffee break was scheduled 3km farther North at East Tarbert Bay where the paddlers hoped to have a look at an (elusive) standing stone, however, the dense bracken thwarted sighting the stone and before they knew it, they had rounded Sgeir Fhiacail and arrived at Bagh na Doirlinne which was their camping spot for the night. With stunning views of the hills of Jura and the most magnificent sunset, this campsite is one of the very best!

The four paddlers woke the following morning to clear blue skies and a flat calm sea which was to shape the most perfect day for sea kayaking. The first stretch of 8.5km from Bagh na Doirlinne to Caoloas Craro was aided by the South going tide, taking in the meticulously restored 18th century watermill at Port an Duin on the way. Three members chose to navigate the well walked path by Shanks’s pony from Caolas Craro in search of the beautiful Achamore Gardens whilst the other remained with the boats in order to gradually move them down the beach with the ever receding tide, preventing a lengthy portage across the dried out bay. On their return, the four set off down and around the Southern end of the Island and across to Gigalum Island where they stopped for lunch and a blether before crossing the Sound back to Tayinloan.

Distance paddled: Day 1 – 16km, Day 2 – 18km

<div
